چکیده

New research from California confirms the safety of pasteurized mother’s milk for HIV-exposed babies (Israel-Ballard, 2005). Two methods of heat-treatment, known as Flash-Heating and Pretoria Pasteurization, were compared to assess their impact on HIV and antimicrobial properties of breast milk, as well as on nutrient content.Milk samples were spiked with clade C HIV-1 (the sub-type found in areas of sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest prevalence of infection) and innoculated with common pathogens found in milk which may affect storage safety. 50 mL milk samples were then heat-treated by either method, using common household containers found in an ordinary home – a 1 Litre aluminium cooking pot containing 450 ml of water, and a 450 ml glass jar with a lid.

The correlation between aerobic mesophilic microorganism counts and Dornic acidity in expressed human breastmilk.

OBJECTIVE The study was designed to test for the existence of a correlation between the total population of aerobic mesophilic microorganisms in processed raw breastmilk from a human milk bank and the Dornic acidity of that milk. METHODS Two hundred consecutive samples of thawed expressed human breastmilk obtained from human milk bank, prior to pasteurization. Dornic acidity was titrated in t...

Breastmilk handling routines for preterm infants in Sweden: a national cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND In Sweden preterm infants born <32 gestational weeks are fed maternal breastmilk or, if not available, donor breastmilk. Nutritional and immunological composition of human milk is affected by processing and storage procedures. Additionally, freezing of breastmilk may reduce cytomegalovirus transmission. The present recommendations for human milk use in Sweden are outdated. However, n...

Bacterial safety of flash-heated and unheated expressed breastmilk during storage.

Heat-treated breastmilk is one infant-feeding option recommended by the WHO to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in developing countries. Flash-heat, a simple pasteurization method that a mother could perform in her home, has been shown to inactivate cell-free HIV-1. Since heating may affect the naturally occurring antimicrobial properties found in breastmilk, storing heated breastmilk...

Attitudes towards exclusive breastfeeding and other infant feeding options--a study from Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.

The HIV/AIDS-pandemic causes many problems for the most affected societies and their health care systems. One of these is the 'parent to child transmission' (PTCT) through breastmilk and its prevention (PPTCT). As economic and hygienic conditions do not always assure safe replacement feeding in developing countries, a WHO/UNAIDS/UNICEF-expert panel proposed methods to reduce the risk of PTCT bu...

Centralized breastmilk handling and bar code scanning improve safety and reduce breastmilk administration errors.

Safe handling and preparation of breastmilk within the hospital setting are often taken for granted, and the process may not be scrutinized until problems arise. Areas of concern focus on both risk of contamination of breastmilk feedings due to handling and fortification and risk of a breastmilk misadministration. In two phases, Children's Hospital of Orange County (Orange, CA) implemented cent...
